The Calgary Assessment Review Board (ARB) is an independent and impartial tribunal that hears and adjudicates formal complaints against the assessments of any property, business or local improvement in the city of Calgary.

Eligibility:

The ARB is seeking candidates with backgrounds in:

  • Real estate,
  • Property management,
  • Property development,
  • Property appraisal,
  • Assessment, or
  • Law.

Additionally, previous experience with a quasi-judicial board or administrative tribunal is considered an asset. Candidates must have good analytical skills, the ability to be fair and open-minded, and a capacity to work collaboratively with stakeholders, the General Chair, other ARB members and staff.

Tax agents, assessors and employees of The City of Calgary are not eligible to be appointed to the ARB.

Time Commitment:

  • All ARB hearings are conducted during weekday business hours. Hearings are normally held daily from late April until the end of November. Board Members are typically scheduled for one to two weeks per month during the above time period.
  • You must be available and agreeable to commit the required time.
  • Members are appointed for one year terms, commencing January 01 and ending on December 31.

Training:

  • Following appointment to the Board, ARB members must successfully complete a training program set or approved by the Minister of Municipal Affairs.
  • Calgary ARB specific training is also provided by the Board’s leadership, by Board administration and by the Board Solicitor.

Remuneration:

  • Remuneration is payable to members of the Board under provisions of the ARB Bylaw.
  • Members receive remuneration for adjudicating assessment complaints and for training.
